Zim Shipping Lines

Zim Integrated Shipping Services, formerly Zim American Israeli Shipping and ZIM Israel Navigation Company, is the biggest cargo shipping company in Israel.

The name “ZIM” was suggested by Israel’s first Minister of Transportation, David Remez, based on a passage in the Old Testament (Numbers 24:24) in which the Hebrew word “Zim” is used to refer to “large vessels.” The name was chosen as appropriate for the company’s main goal: to build a large merchant fleet.

ZIM was founded in 1945, by the Israel’s Jewish Agency, Histadrut Labor Federation and the Israel Maritime League. In 2004, ZIM was purchased by the Ofer Brothers Group. The new official name after privatization became Zim Integrated Shipping Services.

As of October 2010, the Israel shipping company is operating a fleet of 94 container ships, with total capacity over 300,000 TEU’s, and is in the top 20 largest shipping companies throughout the world.
