APL: American President Lines

American President Lines Ltd. (APL) is the world's fifth-largest container transportation and shipping company, providing services to more than 140 countries through a network combining intermodal freight transport operations with IT and e-commerce.

APL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines, a global transportation and logistics company engaged in shipping and related businesses.

APL traces its history back to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company founded by the William Henry Aspinwall in 1848 in USA. Over the course of these 160 years, the prosperous business that APL and its predecessors built has made APL an industry leader in container shipping.

In 1997, the American company was bought by Neptune Orient Lines (Singapore) for $285 million in the largest acquisition ever made by a Singapore company.
