Panama Canal throughput increases
The Panama Canal handled 322.1 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System tons (PC/UMS) during its business year ending 30 September, +7% year-on-year and also 7% more than previous record year 2007. Upon the commissioning of the new set of much larger locks by late 2014, estimated annual capacity will increase to minimum 600 millions.
Out of an estimated cost of EUR 300 million (USD 400 million) for the required upgrade of the Brunsbüttel locks giving access to the Kiel Canal from the North Sea, the German government has now been able to free a budget of EUR 200 million (USD 265 million). The Kiel Canal offers an important shipping shortcut (versus the route around Denmark) between the North Sea and the Baltic.
